Thanks, Joyfulstephanie, for nominating me for the Liebster award!

I was nominated for the Liebster award by Joyfulstephanie which was an honor because I enjoy her blog also. This is an informal award which allows bloggers to recognize fellow bloggers. After being recognized, bloggers can “pay it forward” by nominating 5 other bloggers. To do so we are asked to: display the Liebster logo, thank the person who nominated you, answer his or her questions, nominate the 5 other bloggers, ask a new set of questions, and let our nominees know about it. This is kind of like a chain letter in a way, but I like it because it’s a way for us to spread the word about good content to read.

On to Stephanie’s questions:

  1. What was a major turning point in your life? I’d have to go with my heart valve replacement. That was a pretty major surgery and challenging rehab. It also made my mortality hard to deny, as I might have been dead within a year if the surgery hadn’t been done. That is a good wake up call!
  2. What positive life lesson did you learn from this major turning point? It motivated me to put health first, keep doing physical activity I enjoy, eat well, and take other aspects of healthy aging like mindfulness and meditation more seriously. It also motivated me to share this lesson with others.
  3. Who is your greatest inspiration and why is this person a greatest inspiration? That’s hard to narrow down to one, but Thich Nhat Hanh was the first name that sprung to mind. He went through some tough times during the Vietnam war including being exiled by his government, but continues to be a very positive role model and teacher.
  4. What is your favorite book and why is this your favorite book? The Anna Meares Story was inspirational for me. She bounced back from breaking her neck in a bad track cycling accident to winning the gold medal in the Olympics in the same event she had crashed in. It’s takes special courage to “get back on the horse” after a bad accident like that, and she showed great determination during rehab to get back to her elite fitness level. This especially resonated with me as I was going through my challenging heart valve rehab while reading it.
  5. What is your favorite movie and why is that your favorite movie? Gandhi– The story of a man changing the world in major ways completely nonviolently is very inspirational.
  6. Potato chips or chocolate? ย Which one would you choose if you had a craving for a snack? That’s a real toughie. I’m definitely more of a sweet tooth than salt tooth guy, but I’m allergic to chocolate. I get headaches from it. When I tell people that they often shake their heads sadly like “life wouldn’t be worth living”. I think I’d go with chocolate anyway, which shows how strong cravings can be!

My nominees are:

Susiesopinions: The chronicles of an extremely fit lady in her 70s. She is also caregiver to her husband who remains positive and as healthy as possible despite medical challenges.

todaysperfectmoment: Anthony is a teacher and avid cyclist. I enjoy how he always tries to find something positive in his day to day experiences to write about.

One Regular Guy Writing about Food, Exercise and Living Past 100: Tony is more than 10 years older than me but very fit, another avid cyclist, and is a healthy eater. His blog provides inspiration and good information and advice on healthy aging.

Christine Rosenbloom, PhD, RD, FAND: Good advice on healthy living after 50 from Dr Christine who has a PhD in nutrition and many years experience teaching and practicing. Her blog is about the 3 aspects of healthy aging: “eating well, moving well, and being well”.

Globetrotting Grandpa: Darryl, aka Grandpa, shares his travel adventures with us with interesting stories about visiting many places in the US and abroad.

My questions:

  1. What motivated you to start a blog?
  2. What is the number one piece of advice or motivation you’d like people to take away from your blog?
  3. Who is your most inspirational figure?
  4. What is your favorite food?
  5. What is your favorite physical activity (PG rated, please ๐Ÿ™‚ )?
  6. What do your do for stress relief?

Thank you again Joyfulstephanie! ๐Ÿ™‚
