I am a mechanical engineer born in 1953 with a lifetime interest in outdoor activities and fitness. My lovely wife of 44 years, Karen, and I live in Morgan Hill, Ca, a bit south of the San Francisco Bay Area. I have gone through and rehabbed from three major surgeries: two hip replacements, and a heart valve replacement due to a congenital condition. On this site I will chronicle my efforts to stay active despite these and other bumps in the road. I also give advice based on what I have learned over the years on physical and mental training as well as diet. As an engineer I am comfortable wading through scientific literature, and have tried to come up with an efficient solution to the problem of aging gracefully.

I certainly do not consider my story to be in any way unique. There are many people who have overcome bigger challenges than me to stay active. I will search out stories of other such people and post them, too.

I also would like you to tell your story of staying active while aging or overcoming challenges. Please contact me if you would like to submit one.

  1. Hey Rich, I did it! I am recovering from last Monday’s full hip replacement surgery. It’s tougher than people make it seem, but I think I overdid the ice. I should have done the 20 minutes on and sometimes it was on while i was sleeping and from what I read, that isn’t good. My first post-op Dr’s appt is on Friday, so I’m hoping with what I’ll hear. Just wanted to say hi and read again your wonderful post. Thank you for being the poster-child I wanted to live up to! I know I still have a ways to go, but so far, so good. I’m looking forward to being pain-free soon! Thank you for your inspiration.
    Hugs, Joan
